The First 24

The gray pieces have been given out or will be shortly, the white ones are still available. I'll cut the second batch of twenty-four (two more columns on either side) fairly soon.

CUSTOM PUZZLE CRAFT

John Stokes

If you don't already know about John Stokes then you haven't been paying attention. He's probably the world's greatest puzzlesmith, and a few years ago he began the 100 Puzzles Project. He has now made, and auctioned on eBay, ninety-nine jigsaw puzzles (he's made a lot more than that but they weren't all part of the project). As he has approached the end, the buzz, and auction prices, for his puzzles have soared. Puzzle #98 sold for a paltry $17,271. He is preparing to begin Puzzle #100, which will be gigantic and feature all of his different cutting styles. Epic indeed!

I first started making puzzles because I wanted to give my wife a weird Valentine's Day gift; I looked at my daughter's little tray puzzles and decided I could do something like that. It wasn't until I found John Stokes on the internet that I saw puzzling as an art form, an art form with a lot of history and skilled craftsmen. Follow the progress of #100 through his journal.

BELLA PUZZLES

There's a cool puzzle lady named Lara Braithwaite I've found; she writes a fun blog about all things puzzle, and she also sells puzzles on Etsy. She creates puzzles the traditional way (adhering a print to wood and then cutting it out) but her images and cutting style are anything but traditional. Check her out!

ONE MORE THING

I discovered this huge, sprawling puzzle. It took me years to put the thing together, and when I got to the end, there were dozens of pieces missing, edge pieces even. But the great thing is, if all the missing pieces had been there, the puzzle wouldn't have worked. It was better for not having all the pieces! Pretty amazing. See it here.
